Šunj beach, the heart of Lopud summer buzz
Travelling to Lopud? Our famous sandy Šunj beach is characterised as a favourite beach among locals and tourists. Sandy beaches are outnumbered by pebbly ones in Croatia, and Šunj is almost a kilometre long of natural sand. The sea is so shallow that you have to walk more than 100 meters to swim, which makes it perfect for kids.

How to get to the Šunj Beach
In our previous post, we explained the easiest way to get to the island of Lopud. But now, the main question is: “How can I get to the Šunj beach?”.
The Šunj beach is located on the other side of Lopud settlement, and it is reachable on foot for around 20 min. The walk across the island is delightful, but keep in mind that one part of the road is steeper. On your way to the beach, you will notice golf cars which run as a taxi service. The cost of a ride is HRK 20 per person (around EUR 3 ). We encourage you to take a taxi one way and walk the other. The ride will be an unforgettable experience and for sure you will think to yourself “I can’t believe that this is happening”. Please, update us on how it went. Don’t be surprised if you come across on Lopud’s domestic animals. They are minding their own business, but like to be photographed.
For those who are staying longer on Lopud island, we highly recommend visiting Šunj beach early in the morning. If you are there up to 8 a.m., you will avoid day-trippers, take the best place near the sea and find out all that island life is about. Do not forget to protect yourself with suncream, wear a hat, and drink a lot of water. As there is not so much natural shade on the beach, there is an option to rent deck chairs and beach umbrellas.

Where to eat on the Šunj Beach
One of my favourite places on Lopud’s beach Šunj is the restaurant/bar “Rajski Kutak Bindo” which you will find on a small hilltop, hidden in the shade of trees. In its relaxing atmosphere, you will meet the most friendly staff and your senses will be tempted by a variety of dishes. My favourite is chicken grill wok with cold beer aside. After you are full, take your drink to a hammock and spend some extra time in this oasis of tranquility. Beside it, there are two more beachfront restaurants that offer a great variety of meals.

Fun activities on the beach
Every kid on Lopud grows up by playing picigin and we still like to play it. The recipe goes like this: one small ball, few friends and shallow sea (in this case, the Šunj beach). The only goal is to keep the ball in the air. Another fun thing you can do with your friends or family is to rent a paddleboat. The price for up to 6 persons is HRK 100 for one hour (approximately EUR 14). There are also kayaks which are suitable for children (for one hour the price is HRK 50 or EUR 7). Or, you can try volleyball on the sand.
Lopud’s secret beauty recipe
In addition to being beautiful and sandy, Sunj Beach also has a special health value. The red soil near the beach has medical benefits. Islanders mix it with sea and rub on the body to treat less rheumatic problems. Moreover, with this treatment, their skin becomes soft and velvety. It is interesting to know that The Guardian classified the Šunj beach as one of the best beaches in the world.
